William Buden Obituary

William Frederick Buden, 76, of Southington, husband of Jane (Dickman) Buden, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024, surrounded by his family. A loving husband, proud father and devoted grandpa, Bill dedicated his life to serving others, with a career spanning over 30 years in law enforcement for the town of Plainville.

Born on November 9, 1947, in New Britain, CT he was one of two sons to the late Anthony and Rita (Macholtz) Buden, and was a 1965 graduate of New Britain High School.  Billy had a passion for music, playing the drums from the young age of 15, performing in professional bands including Messenger and The Galdeans, which brought him much joy throughout his life.  Some of his many musical career highlights include playing for three different US Presidents.

Bill enlisted in the US Navy following high school graduation, proudly serving his country for four years and playing in the Navy band during the Vietnam Era.  He was honorably discharged in 1969, and began his career in law enforcement in 1972.  A compassionate and empathetic officer, Bill was beloved and appreciated by all who knew him. He earned the distinction of revolver master, and was head of the revolver league, and served many years as a member and Past President of the Police Association.   Among his many accolades and thick file of commendations, his illustrious career saw him honored as Officer of the Year in 1996.   He was a mentor and friend to his colleagues, particularly his best friend and little brother, Patrick, who he served alongside during much of his career.  Even after retirement, Bill continued to serve his community, providing his expertise on a part-time basis for many years.   His commitment to service extended beyond his military and law enforcement careers, as he was also actively involved with the Elks Lodge #957 in New Britain, and a proud supporter and volunteer for countless organizations, including the Rotary Club of Plainville.

In retirement, Bill and Jane enjoyed wintering in Florida, making frequent visits to Disney, their designated "happy place." He had a love for all things sci-fi, enjoyed cruises, NASCAR races, and seasonal "glamping" at Nelson’s Campground. A connoisseur of knowledge and an avid reader, he was an ambidextrous man of many talents including art and photography, and no DIY project was too big or small for him to tackle.

His million-dollar smile, quick wit, and kindness endeared him to many, and his presence will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Billy is survived by his devoted wife Jane; his children, Nicholas and his wife Christy and Holly Brunette and her husband Brian; and his pride and joy, his granddaughters Makayla and Allison.  He also leaves his brother, Patrick Buden and his wife Susan and their sons, Paul and Patrick, Jr and their families.

In lieu of flowers, Bill may be remembered with contributions to the Rotary Club of Plainville, PO Box 484, Plainville CT 06062.
