Obituary

Steven J. Williams, 65, of Bristol, CT passed away on September 13, 2023 at St. Francis Hospital, following a yearlong struggle with esophageal cancer. Steve was the middle son of Owen E. and Mary (Watt) Williams. He grew up and attended school in Farmington, where the farms, fields, and river were his playground. Steve graduated from Farmington High School in 1976, playing varsity golf all four years. He went on to receive an associate’s degree in Civil Engineering from Hartford State Technical College. Steve worked for the City of Waterbury for 21 years, retiring at the age of 53. Hard work paid off! More recently Steve spent 2 years working for the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation, retiring for good in 2018.

An avid golfer, Steve was a member of the Men’s Club at Rockledge Golf Club in West Hartford. He began caddying at Tunxis Plantation Country Club at the age of 8, and continued his love of the game until his health prevented him from playing in the past year. Steve was also a devoted skier, skiing the slopes of Vermont and New Hampshire as often as possible. He traveled to Colorado for years, as well as several trips to ski the Alps in France, Switzerland and Austria. Besides golf and skiing, Steve enjoyed river fishing, auto races, vegetable gardening, and a good cigar! Steve loved the ocean, boogie boarding, swimming, and searching for heart shaped rocks. He grew up spending family vacations at Misquamicut and continued to be a devotee of the Rhode Island beaches. Steve loved music of all kinds; he attended hundreds of concerts over the years.

Steve entered the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous in 1996 and recently celebrated his 27th year of continuous sobriety. He was very active in the organization as a speaker, a sponsor, and in service.

Steve leaves his wife of 8 years, Denise (Bonneau) Colwick Williams, his step-children, Ken Hyde and his partner, Jennifer Scriven, of New Hartford, Lauren Durfee and her husband, Joe, of Colchester, and the lights of his life, his grandchildren, Jacob, Hannah and Noah Durfee. Steve leaves his two brothers, Owen Edward Williams, Jr., of Farmington, and Thomas Williams, of Orlando, Florida, his nieces, nephews and cousins. Steve will be greatly missed by Zeke, our 2-year-old Australian Shepard.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2023, from 3 to 6pm, in Pearson Hall at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 355 Camp Street, Bristol, CT. This will be a casual, open house, gathering of Steve’s friends and family. Come as you are, share memories, eat, laugh, and cry.  Love and friendship are the greatest healers of all.
