Obituary

Mary Louise (Moore) Sylvia of Simsbury, CT (formerly of Plainville, CT) passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on September 12, 2023. Mary Lou was born Mary Louise Borges on August 15, 1943, at St. Ann’s Hospital in Fall River, Massachusetts on the Feast of the Assumption. Her name (Mary) was chosen by the nuns who prayed over her, the only girl born that day at the hospital. She is the daughter of the late Lena (Raymundo) Borges and George Borges. Mary was raised in Somerset, Massachusetts along with her three siblings in a proud Portuguese American community. She is a graduate of Somerset High School.

Mary Lou was a beloved mother, nana, and friend, known for her dedication to her family, her sense of humor, and her loving nature. She was an avid reader and would spend hours reading and could get lost in a book. She loved to cook and bake. She is famously known for making the most amazing sausage stuffing and Christmas would not be the same without her Christmas wreath desserts. She also loved horror movies, the scarier the better. She also loved music, which led to her nickname of Marytunes.

But what she loved most was her family. She was a beacon of love, support, and generosity to them all. She raised four children with William Moore in Plainville, CT. She dedicated her life to her children, from football games, wrestling matches, cheerleading competition, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and loved being a part of the activities as much as her children. She welcomed her children’s friends into her home, Beechwood Road was always filled with kids and activities. She was a member of the Plainville Women’s Club, taught catechism at Our Lady of Mercy, and was a Den Mother for Plainville’s Cub Scout Pack.

As much of an amazing mother as she was, she was equally an amazing Nana. Her grandchildren were the light of her world. Some lived close and some lived far but Nana always made you feel like you were the most important part of her life. She kept up with all their activities and stayed current on social media and pop culture. She could talk with the kids about anything and relate to them like no other.

Mary Lou is survived by her four children Bill and Brenda Moore of Avon, CT, Michael and Diane Moore of Boynton Beach, FL, Wendy and August Savarese of Simsbury, CT, and Christopher Moore of Clearwater, FL, and step son Joe Sylvia. She also leaves behind her nine grandchildren Kelsey and Matthew Buckley of Ellsworth, Maine, Sarah Moore, Tampa, FL, Michael Moore of Boynton Beach, FL, August Savarese of Arlington, VA, Kaitlin Savarese of Quincy, MA, Julia Moore of Tampa, FL, Andrew and Nicholas Savarese of Simsbury, CT, and Christopher Moore Jr. of Clearwater, FL.  She also leaves behind William Moore, Karen Hall, Robin Wycislak, Joseph Borges and many nieces, nephews, and godchildren Karen Misko, Michael Mastrianni and Maggie Carpenter that she loved dearly. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph R. Sylvia of Plainville.

Mary’s family would like to extend their extreme gratitude to the medical and nursing staff at McLean’s in Simsbury for the compassionate care of our mom.
