Marilyn C. (Murphy) Johnson

Marilyn C. (Murphy) Johnson, 85, of Plainville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Saturday, October 8, 2022. 

The daughter of the late John and Jeannette (Fields) Murphy, Marilyn was born on January 21, 1937 in New Britain, and was raised and educated in Plainville.  Marilyn worked as an executive assistant for John Hancock Insurance for 38 years, and selflessly spent her retirement volunteering in different capacities for New Britain General Hospital for over 30 years, having been honored with “Volunteer of the Year” in 2008.  She had a love for travel, visiting most of the US and Europe; and was a devout parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy Church for over 65 years, where she sang in the choir.  Known throughout her family for her homemade meatballs, her baked beans and her classic mashed potatoes, Marilyn enjoyed cooking and spending her weekends quietly knitting in her camper in Otis, MA.  Her holiday sweaters have become somewhat legendary, and she had a broach for every occasion imaginable.  In her later years, she took great comfort from her Yorkie, Sophie.  A devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she will be missed dearly and remembered fondly for her love, generosity and bright smile.

She is survived by her loving daughter with whom she made her home, Meda Talley and her husband Jimmy; her adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren who she took immense joy in doting on, Craig Stegmaier, his wife Kristen and their children, Dylan, Morgan, Sean, Kolin, Aiden, Peyton, and Kylen; Eric Stegmaier, his wife Heather and their daughter, Ada; and Rebecca Espinoza, her husband Roberto and their children, Jaiden, Julian and Ella; her sisters, Meda Moschini and Frances Baillargeon; along with many nieces, nephews and extended family.  She was predeceased by her brother, John Murphy.

Marilyn may be remembered with contributions to the Plainville Community Food Pantry, PO Box 233, Plainville, CT 06062, an organization she proudly supported for many years, or to the Plainville Fire Company, 77 W. Main St, Plainville, CT 06062.

Funeral services in celebration of Marilyn’s life will be held on Friday, October 14, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad St, Plainville.  Committal will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.  Family and friends may gather before the services on Friday, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.  For online expressions of sympathy, please visit www.PlainvilleFuneralHome.com
