Joseph Maitz Obituary

Joseph Louis Maitz, 80, of Plainville, devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 14, 2023.  He was the husband and best friend of Lois (D’Agostino) Maitz, with whom he shared 59 years of love, laughter and world travels.

Born in New Britain on October 19, 1942, Joe was one of five children to the late Valentine and Mary (Gombatz) Maitz.  Raised and educated in New Britain, he graduated from EC Goodwin Technical School and held a successful career as an operating engineer and superintendent of demolition for more than 40 years, continuing as an active retiree of the I.U.O.E. Local #478.  Known for his knowledge and expertise in a variety of areas, he was called upon for several major projects statewide, and selflessly shared his talents and skills with his friends, family and anyone in need, expecting nothing in return.  He and Lois settled in Plainville where they raised their two sons, became proud grandparents and hosted countless holidays with creatively cooked meals by Joe, usually including some spiciness and his famous hot peppers.  He found great joy in the sport of hunting, having traveled on trips across the US and to South Africa on more than one occasion with his cousin Carmen, fulfilling his passion.  Joe was a dedicated member of the New Britain Good Old Boys, where his volunteerism at their many events was greatly appreciated.  Fondly remembered for his kindness and infectious sense of humor, he will be missed dearly.

In addition to his wife, Lois, he leaves his son, Cory Maitz and his wife, Emilia; his grandchildren, Marissa, Sabrina, and Sofia, who filled his heart with unending love; his sister, Evelyn Demonstranti; his brother, William Maitz and his wife, Elaine, and several adored nieces and nephews, including his special nieces, Laurie, Lisa and Lynn with whom he had a strong family bond. He also leaves a wide circle of friends and colleagues, and his faithful companion Beignet, “Ben”, who provided him with much comfort.  He was predeceased by his son, Todd Christopher Maitz, his brother, Valentine and his sister, Winifred.

In lieu of flowers, Joe may be remembered with contributions to the Boston Children’s Hospital at www.childrenshospital.org or Plainville Community Food Pantry, PO Box 33, Plainville, CT  06062.
