James J. Toomey, 84, of Farmington, formerly of New Britain, passed away in the comfort of his home with his loving wife of 64 years, Camilla (Vitale) Toomey, by his side on Monday, April 24, 2023.
James was born on July 25, 1938 in Waterbury, CT son to the late James A. and Elizabeth (Majewski) Toomey. He worked for Stanley Works in New Britain for over 41 years and retired as the head of maintenance. James spent many summers at the beach in Maine, where he and his family shared many memorable trips to their cottage and he was the former President of the Moody Beach Association. He enjoyed the outdoors and was a member of the Bristol Fish and Game for many years. A true family man, James loved spending Sundays surrounded by family and was a master chef in the kitchen. A delicious meal was always enjoyed by those who he entertained and he passed on his cooking skills to all who were interested in learning or watched him in the kitchen. A natural with his hands, he excelled in wood-working and constructing pretty much anything he set his mind to. James was a leader and inspired others to always want to do the right thing. A generous man, with a witty sense of humor and loving personality, James will be deeply missed by his entire family.
In addition to his wife, Camilla, James is survived by his children, Mary Jo Girardin and her husband, Alan, Kathleen D’Amato and her husband, Guerino, Robin Tighe and her husband, Timothy, and James P. Toomey and his wife, Beth; his grandchildren, Jessica Cetola and her husband, Michael, Amber Verno and her husband, Eric, A.J. Girardin, Zachary Tighe and his wife, Kristina, Conner Toomey, Kelly Toomey, Griffin Tighe, Gianna D’Amato, and Lauren Toomey; and his great-grandchildren, Marina Cetola, Ethan Cetola, Liam Verno, Luca Verno, Brayden Tighe, and Liviana Verno. He was predeceased by his brother, Greg Toomey.
In celebration of James’ life, family and friends are welcome to gather at the Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad Street, Plainville on Sunday, April 30 from 11 AM to 1 PM. In true James’ fashion, to keep things casual, there will be no formal services and burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of James can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. The staff at Plainville Funeral Home extends their gratitude to the Toomey family for their trust.
