Eltha Louise (Vaughan) Cole

On November 24, 2022 Eltha Louise (Vaughan) Cole, affectionately known as “Cherry,” 79, of Plainville, was lost to us in death.

Cherry was born on August 14, 1943 in Kingston, Jamaica daughter to the late James Vaughan and Esmie Birthwright. Cherry was, by trade a talented seamstress, she plied her craft for many years in Jamaica creating many beautiful pieces. She emigrated to Connecticut in 1976, eventually settling in Plainville. Cherry began working for various companies, including Bristol Spring and Stanley Works, from where she retired. During her retirement she enjoyed working at Gnazzo’s in the deli department, where she assisted many customers over the years, always with a friendly smile and a kind word.

Though diminutive of stature and modest of means, she was a titan of heart, this was evident in the selfless way in which she helped others. She viewed life and people in such a way that no one that meet her stayed a stranger for long. Her hospitality was legendary, it seemed that she could provide a meal for a large gathering of family and friends as easily as she would for a single dinner guest. The warm-heartedness that she extended, made those who knew her feel as though she was a never-ending source of love and encouragement.  A true gem, Eltha leaves behind many special memories for her family and friends to cherish and remember her by.

Eltha leaves behind her beloved daughters, Michelle Walsh Macko and Shelley Cole; her dear grandchildren, Tye, Chloe, Noah, and Izzy; her sister, Barbara Willis and her husband, Hubert; her nieces, Nadine Vaughan and her daughter Ashley, Lisa Richardson and her husband Mark, a nephew, Peter Willis and his wife, Vivian, and their children, Barbara, Preston, Jasmine, and Isabella. She also leaves behind her feline companions, Sam and Suzette. Cherry was predeceased by her son, Andrew Mark Cole and her brother, James Vaughan.

Family and friends are welcome to gather on Friday, December 9 from 11 to 12 PM at the Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad St., Plainville. A service in celebration of Cherry’s life will begin at 12 PM. Burial will follow in West Cemetery, Plainville.
