Daniel Smith of Fort Pierce, FL, passed away on his 77th birthday, Tuesday, October 30, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Joan (Bednarz) Smith, with whom he shared 43 years of marriage. Born in Bermuda on October 30, 1941, he was the son of the late Philip and Mary (Chippendale) Smith.
Daniel was raised in Bermuda, where he attended local schools and was a partner in International Fixed Odds gaming business, from where he retired. He and Joan were married on the island in 1975, and settled in Plainville, CT where they raised their son, and retired to Florida in 2009. Daniel remained close to his Bermuda roots, as a life member of the Queens Club. He was an avid sports fan and lived to see his beloved Red Sox win the World Series.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Joshua D. Smith and wife, Darcy of Tolland, CT, step-granddaughters, Megan Morrissey of Berlin and Caitlin Morrissey of Stockton, CA; brother, Philip Gordon Smith and wife, Heather of Greer, SC and sister, Mary Doreen Hoffman and husband Louis of Honea Path, SC, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister Margaret Alice Dvorak, his niece Kelly Dvorak, and his step-daughter, Susan Freberg Morrissey.
In lieu of flowers Daniel may be remembered with a donation to the charity of your choice. Family and friends may gather in celebration of Daniel’s life on Saturday, November 24, 2018 from 10-11 a.m. at Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad St, Plainville. Words of Remembrance will be shared at 11 a.m. Daniel will be laid to rest in Bermuda at a later date.
