Arthur Johnson, 81, of Plainville, passed away at his home, surrounded by his family, on Monday, September 24, 2018, after a hard fought, brief battle with cancer.
Born and raised Norwich on April 18, 1937, he was the son of the late Harry and Irene “Helen” (Maistras) Johnson. Art was honorably discharged from the US Army, having enlisted shortly after high school. He married the love of his life, Madeline (Hartley), and settled in Plainville where they shared 46 years together, raised their two loving children, and became proud grandparents 11 years ago. Art was a quiet, humble man, who enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, including watching the Discovery and Travel Channels, and Masterpiece Theatre. He could be found many days working on his perfectly manicured yard, of which he took great pride. He was a true family man, who will be missed dearly.
In addition to his wife, Madeline, he leaves his children, Valerie and Christopher; his grandchildren, Emily and Aiden; his sisters, Chrysanthe Kowal and Patricia St. Pierre; along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Jimmy and George and his sisters, Jean Johnson and Sophie Estatio.
Funeral services in celebration of Art’s life will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad St. Plainville. Committal services and interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Family and friends may gather one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Art’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 825 Brook St, Rocky Hill, CT 06067 or www.cancer.org
